What is great about this ad is that it answers the “why?” It tells the target market, otherwise known as the hopeless romantics, that they should care if they want their life to be like in a movie: boy meets girl and boy falls in love at first sight. It tells the viewers “Don’t ever miss out on a chance encounter.” By telling a story instead of giving the hard facts of the app, it plays to the emotions of viewers. It also makes them have to seek out more information. If the company manages to get the viewer to seek out more information, the chances are high that they will download the app. This commercial is part of a #MakeItHappn campaign, which is aimed at creating online chatter and buzz about the product. Additionally, the slogan “Make it happen” tells viewers that they should download the app if they want to be in control of their own fate. It says “C’est vrai que le hasard fait bien les choses. Mais, il ne fait pas tous. Avec Happn, retrouvez qui vous croisez.” (Translation: It’s true that chance organizes things well. But it doesn’t do everything. With Happn, find the people you cross paths with.) Even though the ad doesn’t speak a lot to the technical qualities of the app and how it compares to competitors, it is definitely a persuasive ad. It says “don’t go to competitors who will set you up with strangers. Use our app where you will be in control of your own fate.” Moreover, the fact that the last frame tell you on which platforms the app is available, there is definitely no secret that the ad is trying to get you to download the product.
