While flying through BWI, I noticed something rather unique: a delivery service within the airport. Given the small space within which this service operates–notably concourse E of BWI–and the fact that flyers spend hours seated during their flight, I’m curious to see if this service will take off. Personally, if I know that I will be sitting down for the next several hours, I would prefer to move around instead of to sit down. Additionally, I would not really be willing to pay to have something delivered to me from several yards away.
Nonetheless, I do see why the airport might have incorporated that service and why it might work. First, this might work because flying is typically a very stressful activity. Some flyers are not comfortable with moving through air at hundreds of miles an hour. Others are worried about conforming to the exponentially growing list of rules and regulations. Still others are concerned with whether the airline personnel might misplace their bags or whether they will make it to their flight in time. Whatever the reason may be, flyers are often stressed when travelling. As a result, having to wait in line to get food might not be something a preoccupied flyer is willing to do. Instead, they might be more willing to find themselves a spot in front of the gate and munch on something delivered while they wait for boarding. On the other hand, the restaurants are happy because they are earning money on every delivery while only having to put in a minimal amount of effort to carry the food the short distance. The airport is also happy because, with shorter lines, the halls will be kept more clear and less people will be moving about, potentially creating conflict.
Do you often get food delivered to you? Would you order from this service if at the airport?
